Watford have signed Senegal international Krépin Diatta on a free transfer, bolstering their squad as the club sits 20th in the EFL Championship table. The 27-year-old winger and full-back has agreed to a one-year contract with an option for a further year, joining the Hornets after spending five-and-a-half seasons with French club AS Monaco, according to the Watford Observer.

Diatta arrives at Vicarage Road wearing the number 15 shirt. Speaking to the club website, he said his decision to join was straightforward after speaking with club officials. “After talking with the people here, the project was very clear in my head,” Diatta told the club. “Watford is a top club that was in the Premier League not too long ago, and I think this is the place they should be.”

Contract Terms And Career Background

The Senegalese international has been a free agent since leaving Monaco over the summer, where he made 143 appearances across all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing nine assists, as reported by Get French Football News. His career began in Norway with Sarpsborg 08 before a move to Club Brugge in 2018, where he made his Champions League debut against Monaco in October 2018. During his time in France, Diatta also overcame a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for most of the 2021/22 campaign.

At international level, Diatta has earned 65 caps for Senegal. He played every minute of his country’s World Cup campaign at right-back, though Watford coaching staff understand he can operate anywhere down the right flank, according to the Watford Observer. Arsenal legend and Senegal national team manager Patrick Vieira omitted Diatta from recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Mozambique and Ethiopia because the player did not have a club, stating simply, “Krepin Diatta isn’t here because he doesn’t have a club,” according to Flashscore.

Midfield Search And Squad Depth

Watford remain active in the free-agent market to address ongoing midfield concerns under head coach Alessio Dionisi, with the club exploring further additions during the international break, according to the Watford Observer.
