Wayne State Baseball Hosts Born In Detroit Camps

DETROIT – The Wayne State University baseball program recently hosted four Born In Detroit camp sessions on January 31 and February 7, at the Duchene Sr. Athletics Facility and Harwell Field. The camps catered to players aged 7-18, focusing on pitching and hitting instruction.

Camp Details

The camp sessions were structured by age level and included detailed instruction in pitching and hitting techniques. Participants engaged in station and drill work, classroom education, and video analysis. Approximately 140 young athletes, ranging from little league to high school levels, took part in the camps on the Wayne State University campus. WSU Athletics reported on the event.

Coach Kelley’s Comments

Wayne State University head coach, Ryan Kelley, expressed his satisfaction with the camp timing, noting it provided a valuable educational experience just before the start of high school and youth baseball seasons. He thanked the participants, families, and coaches for their involvement. Kelley also highlighted a moment of silence dedicated to the life of Ron Teasley, Sr., prior to the February 7 hitting session.

“These two camp dates offered the perfect timing to host a pitching and hitting educational experience,” said Kelley. “With high school and youth baseball seasons on the brink of competition, it was a fantastic opportunity for our program to connect with the motivated camp participants.”

The success of the camps was attributed to the collaboration between Wayne State University and Born In Detroit. Kelley extended gratitude to Anthony Tomey and the Born In Detroit team for their support. He also acknowledged the contributions of WSU assistant coaches, support staff, student-athletes, and event sponsors, including Wayne State University Alumni Richard Hovde, Nick and Vergie Conti, Frank Jeney, and the Ron and Marie Teasley Foundation. WSU Athletics has partnered with Born in Detroit for other initiatives, including an online pop-up shop.
