Waze Begins Testing Traffic Light Displays

The popular Waze navigation app is finally beginning systematic testing of traffic light displays. This move aims to catch up with Google Maps, which has offered this feature sence around 2022. Drivers have been requesting this function for years, and itS now appearing as part of a pilot program, currently limited to Israel.

Waze officially confirmed plans to add traffic lights back in May, but updates have been quiet until now. While the app already shows some traffic lights – including in the Czech Republic – these are typically linked to stationary radar or camera installations monitoring red light crossings.

Developers have taken a sensible approach to avoid overwhelming users with too much information. With active navigation, drivers will see a maximum of three nearest traffic lights on their route, which is enough to anticipate the traffic ahead.

Traffic Lights as Landmarks

In free driving mode, without a set destination, all traffic lights near the user’s location are displayed, providing a thorough overview of the surrounding traffic infrastructure. Currently, the map doesn’t show the signal’s color, only its position. This is an early testing phase,so the range and other parameters may still change.
