Japan’s Yoshinobu Yamamoto is set to start in Saturday’s World Baseball Classic quarterfinal against Venezuela at Miami’s loanDepot park, a venue holding “fond memories” for the defending champions and especially for Shohei Ohtani .

Japan skipper Hirokazu Ibata named Yamamoto as the starting pitcher for the quarterfinal clash. Japan advanced as the unbeaten Pool C winner, while Venezuela finished as the runner-up in Pool D after a 7-5 loss to the Dominican Republic .

Ohtani’s Connection to loanDepot Park

loanDepot park is a significant location for both Japan and Shohei Ohtani. Japan won the 2023 World Baseball Classic championship at this ballpark. Ohtani also achieved a historic milestone there in September 2024, becoming the first Major League Baseball player to record 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers .

Ohtani reflected on his positive experiences at the stadium, stating, “This is a place where I have many fond memories.” He added, “I won’t be focusing on that during the next game, but I think it will naturally grow a positive. But this is a very beautiful stadium with nice weather.”

Despite an earlier report suggesting he might return to Los Angeles, Yoshinobu Yamamoto will remain with Samurai Japan for the remainder of the World Baseball Classic tournament . He will support Japan’s bid for a back-to-back WBC title.
