Houston Weather: Lingering Showers and Flood Concerns into Sunday
Residents of Southeast Texas, including the Houston area, are experiencing lingering showers and the potential for localized flooding as a cold front stalls over the region. While the strongest storms from Saturday night have passed, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to continue through Sunday.
Storms Over the Weekend
A FOX 26 Storm Alert was in effect Saturday night as a stalled front brought heavy rain and severe weather to Greater Houston. The most intense storms have subsided, but the threat of additional rainfall remains. A Flood Advisory was in effect for parts of Harris County until 12:15 a.m. Sunday, and previously for Montgomery County.
Saturday night’s storms impacted the Houston Rodeo, though outdoor activities were paused and attendees were advised to seek shelter indoors. The Saturday night drone indicate was canceled due to the weather.
Sunday’s Forecast
Scattered showers and a few storms are forecast for Sunday, with a decreasing severity compared to Saturday night. Still, any additional rainfall in already saturated areas could lead to street and urban flooding. According to ABC13, rainfall reports across Harris County ranged from half an inch to upwards of 4 inches during Saturday evening.
The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that areas north of Conroe are under a Slight Risk (level 2 of 4) for excessive rainfall today and tonight, while the rest of the region is under a Marginal Risk (level 1 of 4). Locally heavy amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible where severe storms or training storms develop.
Sunday will be damp, humid, and cloudy, with morning lows in the mid-upper 60s and afternoon highs only reaching the mid-upper 70s.
Looking Ahead
A more powerful storm system is expected to move through Texas around Wednesday, bringing another round of high rain chances and a greater risk of severe weather, including the possibility of tornadoes. Following this system, the forecast indicates delightful weather for the remainder of Spring Break, with sunshine, low humidity, and more typical March temperatures.
Travel Impacts
Bush Airport (IAH) experienced a weather-related ground stop on Saturday, resulting in flight delays averaging close to two hours. Travelers should check flight times for updates.
