West Fargo to Host Neighborhood Meeting on April 28 to Discuss Roundabout Plan at 9th Street and 52nd Avenue
West Fargo city officials are set to host a public neighborhood meeting on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 6 p.m. At Legacy Elementary School to discuss proposed intersection improvements at 9th Street West and 52nd Avenue West, including the potential installation of a roundabout.
The meeting, which is open to all residents, will focus on a project that was initially proposed in previous years but paused in 2023 following community concerns over special assessments and ongoing construction in the area. City officials have since revisited the plan after a 2021 traffic study recommended a roundabout be built at the intersection within five years to address safety issues.
According to city representatives, a 2022 traffic count recorded nearly 100 pedestrians crossing the intersection during the peak afternoon hour, with vehicle speeds averaging between 33 and 45 mph. Officials state that traffic volumes at the location do not meet the criteria for a traffic signal under North Dakota Department of Transportation guidelines, and installing an unauthorized signal could jeopardize up to $10 million annually in future DOT funding.
The city maintains that a four-way stop, which was implemented as a temporary measure after the roundabout plan was halted, would lead to increased congestion and traffic backups. Stop signs are not classified as traffic-calming devices as they depend on enforcement and lack physical features to compel drivers to reduce speed.
In contrast, roundabouts are promoted by the Federal Highway Administration as effective safety improvements that significantly reduce serious injury and fatal crashes by eliminating head-on collisions and requiring vehicles to slow down as they navigate the circular intersection.
Property owners in the immediate vicinity of the project have received additional information by mail regarding the meeting and proposed changes. Residents are encouraged to attend the session at Legacy Elementary School, located at 5150 Ninth St. W, to learn more, ask questions, and provide feedback on the intersection improvements, which similarly include storm sewer extensions and shared-use paths.
