The Marshall University swimming and diving team opened the 2026-27 campaign with a 214-61 loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers on Friday at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia, wvusports.com reported. Herd Swimming and Diving Head Coach Phoebe Campbell stated after the meet, according to herdzone.com, that both programs bring out high-level competitiveness. Sam Sowers led Marshall with a third-place finish in the 1000 Freestyle with a time of 11:40.60.

Mountaineers Debut Freshmen Talent in Morgantown

West Virginia relied heavily on its first-year swimmers to sweep the competition. Freshmen Rowan Baglole and Evey Quick each won two individual events, wvusports.com reported. Baglole captured the 100-yard freestyle in 50.84 seconds and the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.47, a mark that stands as the 10th-fastest time in program history. Quick won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.68 seconds and the 100-yard butterfly in 54.02 seconds, tying for the sixth-fastest time in program history.

Freshman Taylor Clements also delivered a standout performance for the Mountaineers by winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.93, recording the second-fastest time in program history. In total, first-year Mountaineers won nine of the 12 individual events. Ally Humbert provided the diving victories for Marshall by taking first place on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, scoring 228.52 on the 3-meter board.

Thundering Herd Prepares for James Madison

Marshall earned several top-three and top-five finishes across the afternoon schedule. Halla Amr Salem finished second in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 24.31 seconds, closely followed by teammate Karley Wolfgram in third at 24.32 seconds, herdzone.com reported. Sadie Rogers added a third-place finish in the 200 Individual Medley in 2:06.52.

The Thundering Herd returns to action to host its first home meet of the season against James Madison on October 30. Meanwhile, West Virginia continues its schedule by facing Cincinnati and Delaware on October 23-24 in Morgantown, according to wvusports.com.
