The Western Cape Mobility Department is launching October Mobility Month on October 1, 2026, by hosting its first-ever Open Day in Athlone to bring transport services directly to residents. Scheduled at the Vangate Shared Services Centre from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event also marks 70 years of Provincial Traffic in the Western Cape, offering free administrative assistance, safety demonstrations, and career guidance.
Free Services and Licensing Assistance in Athlone
Residents attending the Athlone event can access a range of complimentary transport services. According to provincial organizers, the Vangate Shared Services Centre setup provides vehicle safety checks, assistance with motor vehicle and driving licences, roadworthiness information, and support for public transport permits.
Provincial traffic authorities will be on-site to answer questions regarding vehicle compliance and commercial operating licenses.
Road Safety Simulations and Electric Vehicle Exhibits
Beyond paperwork, the department is deploying interactive safety exhibits to demonstrate the physical risks associated with unsafe road behavior. Visitors can participate in a drunk-walking simulation designed to mimic impaired motor coordination.
The grounds will also feature electric vehicle displays, allowing the public to inspect alternative energy transport options firsthand. Additional family-friendly offerings include free health and eye checks, a dedicated bicycle maintenance station, and children’s activity zones.
Career Opportunities and Mobility Programs
The Mobility Department is using the launch event to provide career information. Attendees can register on-site for the Jobseeker Travel Voucher Programme, which assists unemployed residents with transport costs during job hunts.
Information desks will also distribute details regarding the Traffic Officer Cadet bursary programme. Western Cape Mobility Head of Communication Muneera Allie notes that the department wants residents to better understand the role mobility plays in their daily lives.
“Mobility is about much more than getting from one place to another,” Allie explains, emphasizing that transit acts as a vital bridge for communities. “It is about connecting people to work, education, services and opportunities, and getting goods where they need to be.”
Allie encourages the public to use the Athlone gathering as a direct line of communication with the department. “We’re inviting residents to come and meet the people behind our services, ask questions, make use of what we have on offer and learn more about how we are working to keep people and goods moving across the Western Cape.”
