Breast implant illness has emerged as a widely discussed medical phenomenon where patients experience chronic autoimmune symptoms such as joint pain, fatigue, and brain fog following the placement of silicone or saline devices, according to patient accounts and clinical researchers.
Understanding Breast Implant Illness Symptoms and Medical Recognition
Breast implant illness (BII) refers to an umbrella of autoimmune dysfunction characterized by chronic, low-level inflammation triggered by breast implants, according to Dr. Brian Buinewicz, a plastic surgeon in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. While BII has gained substantial traction on social media platforms, it remains an unofficial medical diagnosis that many traditional physicians still find unfamiliar. Patients frequently report a diverse range of systemic issues affecting multiple organ systems throughout the body.
California teacher Britney Pollock experienced the onset of severe health complications years after receiving 400 cubic cm silicone implants under her pectoral muscles in 2016 at age 26. By 2019, Pollock began suffering from debilitating joint and muscle pain, migraines, brain fog, vision problems, and electrical shooting pains in her body and breasts. After consulting several medical specialists, a rheumatologist at the University of California Los Angeles informed her that her symptoms and timeline aligned with an autoimmune disease potentially triggered by her implants.
Theories Behind Why Breast Implants Cause Chronic Inflammation
Medical researchers and plastic surgeons are actively investigating why breast implants provoke severe inflammatory reactions in certain patients while leaving others unaffected. Both silicone and saline breast implants feature an outer shell made of polysiloxane silicone rubber. Although silicone is categorized as biologically inert and non-toxic for standard medical and everyday applications, specialists are examining whether it can ignite inflammatory responses in individuals with pre-existing sensitivities or allergies.

According to a 2021 study co-authored by Buinewicz, which analyzed a cohort of 248 participants, the most common symptoms associated with BII include generalized pain, fatigue, brain fog, migraines, anxiety, arthritis, vision changes, rashes, gastrointestinal issues, and depression. The study noted that textured silicone implants posed the highest risk of inflammation, though patients with all types of implants reported similar symptoms. Additional theories explored by researchers include low-grade bacterial infections related to the devices or genetic factors, such as high expression levels of the RAC2 gene, which may predispose individuals to severe inflammatory reactions against foreign objects like pacemakers and breast implants.
Explant Surgery and Symptom Relief Outcomes
For many individuals suffering from suspected BII, surgical removal of the devices—known as explant surgery—serves as the primary intervention. Buinewicz performs approximately 25 explant surgeries every month to address patient symptoms. After seeking medical guidance, Pollock underwent explant surgery in September 2023. Following the procedure, many of her severe symptoms grew noticeably milder or disappeared entirely, providing both physical relief and mental reassurance.
