Disney has introduced “Infinity Vision,” a new technical certification standard for movie theaters screening upcoming blockbusters, according to studio announcements made at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The label designates existing premium large format (PLF) auditoriums featuring large screens, laser projection, and immersive multichannel audio systems.
The standard arrives as major studios battle for premium screen space ahead of the December 18, 2026 release of Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers. According to industry reports, Warner Bros. secured a three-week exclusive window in U.S. IMAX theaters for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, which opens on the same date. Lacking access to IMAX screens for its primary holiday release, Disney developed Infinity Vision as a defensive alternative to secure premium presentation sites for the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which stars Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom alongside a sprawling ensemble cast including Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and returning Fox-era X-Men actors Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.
What Infinity Vision Certification Entails for Theaters
Infinity Vision operates as a quality-assurance certification rather than a proprietary projection technology like IMAX or Dolby Cinema. According to studio specifications, Disney evaluates and designates existing auditoriums that meet benchmarks for screen size, laser brightness, and audio performance. The classification falls under the broader Premium Large Format (PLF) category, requiring participating locations to have projection and sound infrastructure.
Disney stated that the initiative launched with more than 75 certified locations in the United States and approximately 300 worldwide. By comparison, IMAX operates more than 400 certified screens in the U.S. market. Unlike IMAX or Dolby, which enforce rigid projection and remastering processes, Infinity Vision provides a flexible standard across diverse theater layouts. Industry analysts note that this flexibility allows for rapid global expansion but introduces wider variance in the viewing experience between different certified locations.
Box Office Performance and Early Ticket Sales
To test the infrastructure and build consumer awareness, Disney scheduled a theatrical re-release of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame under the title Endgame Encore on September 25, utilizing the newly minted Infinity Vision network. According to studio disclosures at CinemaCon, the re-release includes previously unreleased footage designed to bridge narrative gaps leading into Avengers: Doomsday.
Commercial response to the strategy has proven robust. According to data published by Variety, U.S. advance ticket sales opened on July 20—exclusively for Infinity Vision locations—and generated $16.5 million in early box office revenue. Showtimes for December 17 and 18 sold out rapidly across multiple markets, prompting theater operators to schedule additional screenings nearly five months ahead of the film’s premiere.
Comparison With Existing Premium Formats
The premium theatrical market features distinct ecosystems with varying technological requirements:
IMAX: Utilizes proprietary dual-projection systems, bespoke aspect ratios, and frame-by-frame digital remastering overseen by the company.
Dolby Cinema: Functions with strict standards imposed by the company.
ScreenX: Extends the feature film across side auditorium walls up to 270 degrees using auxiliary projection systems.
4DX: Integrates motion seats with environmental effects including water, wind, and scent synchronized to the onscreen action.
Infinity Vision: Functions as an independent certification standard applied to pre-existing premium large format auditoriums without altering the native image capture or frame geometry of the film itself.
Global Rollout and International Availability
While U.S. metrics and theater counts have been publicly detailed by distribution analysts, the international deployment remains in progress. Out of the initial pool of approximately 300 certified auditoriums worldwide, a designated share is allocated to European markets. However, specific venue lists for Italy have not yet been finalized or published by the studio. Consumers seeking verified auditoriums ahead of the December premiere can consult the official Infinity Vision portal, which provides location-based searches by city as theater partnerships are confirmed.
