Understanding Implantation Bleeding

YOGYAKARTA – Many women are unsure about what to expect during early pregnancy. Implantation blood can be a sign of early pregnancy, but it’s frequently enough mistaken for menstrual bleeding, leading to delayed pregnancy detection. Here’s an explanation to help differentiate between the two.

What Does Implantation Bleeding Look Like?

Implantation is the process where the embryo implants itself into the uterine wall through cell division. This is a crucial stage in pregnancy, as explained in Pregnancy Midwifery Care by Riska Aprilia Wardan and Nanik Nur Rosyidah (2025).

Implantation blood results from the bursting of small blood vessels as the embryo embeds in the uterine lining. This bleeding is typically light vaginal bleeding and is generally not a cause for concern.

Reproductive Health Nursing by nur Khasanah, et al (2023), also notes that implantation bleeding is usually not risky and typically occurs 6-12 days after fertilization.

Because implantation bleeding indicates pregnancy, some women actively anticipate it. It usually appears within the first to fourth week of pregnancy. However, it’s frequently misidentified as a normal menstrual period.
