According to Anna Wick, a senior sleep researcher at the University of Freiburg in Switzerland, the first-night effect functions as an evolutionary adaptation response. In unfamiliar surroundings, the sleeping brain remains intentionally vigilant, acting as a protective mechanism against potential dangers. Ahmad Mayeli, a psychiatry professor and sleep researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, explains that human brains may remain wired to guard against risks in new settings because historical environments presented significant dangers for rest. Mayeli notes that whether a person rests in a hotel or on the open savannah, the brain has not evolved to recognize modern spaces as entirely secure.

Neurological Impact and Age Variations

Research led by Ahmad Mayeli demonstrates that during the first night in a new location, the frontal lobe—an area associated with deep sleep stages—remains more active than usual, signaling heightened alertness. On average, people sleep 20 to 30 minutes less in an unfamiliar setting. Mayeli compares this partial vigilance to the sleeping patterns of marine mammals, stating that studies show parts of the brain sleep less deeply, similar to how dolphins keep portions of their brains awake. The intensity of this response varies significantly by age. According to Mayeli, the first-night effect is more pronounced in children, adolescents, and older adults, typically worsening with age, while individuals in their 20s experience the least disruption.

Contributing Factors Beyond Evolutionary Vigilance

While evolutionary adaptation initiates the response, various situational triggers intensify sleep disruption. Lisa Strauss, a psychologist specializing in cognitive behavioral treatment of sleep disorders, notes that travel itself creates negative physiological effects, even when travelers remain within the same time zone. Environmental disturbances, such as a flashing smoke alarm light in a hotel room, frequently interfere with rest. Additionally, relational tension—such as staying with unfamiliar family members—can elevate stress levels. Conversely, Strauss observes that some travelers sleep better on night one if exhaustion from travel takes over or if the new location offers a psychological break from daily stressors. Furthermore, individuals who struggle with chronic insomnia at home may experience temporary relief if they do not associate the new environment with a history of sleeplessness.
