WhatsApp Ending Support for Older Android Versions in 2026

WhatsApp is ending support for smartphones running older Android operating systems, forcing users of aging hardware to upgrade their devices or lose access to the messaging platform, according to updates from Meta and reporting by Computer Bild. The platform requires users to run newer software versions to maintain security standards and keep modern features functioning properly across billions of active devices worldwide.

Meta Drops Support for Older Android Software

New Baseline Software Threshold Takes Effect

The updated system requirements take effect immediately, moving the baseline software threshold forward. According to Meta’s technical documentation, WhatsApp now requires Android 6, also known as Marshmallow, or a newer version to operate. Previously, the messaging application supported Android 5.0 and 5.1, known by the codename Lollipop.

How Users Can Check Device Compatibility

Device owners can verify their operating system version directly through their phone settings menu. Depending on the device manufacturer, the specific software details reside under headings such as “About Phone,” “Phone Information,” or “Software Information.” If an update is available on the device, users should install it immediately. If the system information displays Android 5.1 or an older release after checking for updates, users must acquire a newer smartphone to continue using the messaging service.

Millions of Legacy Handsets Impacted Globally

While the change affects a very small percentage of the global mobile ecosystem, the absolute numbers remain notable. Recent distribution statistics highlighted by 9to5Google indicate that Android 5.1 runs on approximately 0.3 percent of tracked devices, while Android 5.0 accounts for 0.1 percent. Combined, these unsupported operating systems represent roughly 0.4 percent of active Android devices. Given that the global active Android ecosystem encompasses approximately 4 billion devices, millions of older handsets still rely on these legacy software iterations.
