WhatsApp is developing an automated welcome message feature designed to streamline onboarding and administration for group chats, according to recent beta testing discoveries reported in August 2026. The Meta-owned messaging platform aims to give group administrators tools to automatically greet new participants with customized instructions, rules, or guidelines the moment they join a community.

Spotted in iOS beta version 26.31.10.73 via TestFlight and Android beta version 2.26.19.2, the upcoming feature centers on efficiency and community management.

Privacy Controls and Selective Visibility

The core mechanism of the planned feature relies on selective visibility to prevent chat clutter. According to technology publication reports, automated greetings will not appear publicly in the main group feed. Instead, the system delivers the text directly and privately to the newly joined member.

To maintain transparency within the app, the notification will reportedly carry an explicit label identifying it as an “Automatic Greeting.” This distinction clarifies that the text is a pre-defined system message from an administrator rather than a real-time individual outreach. Furthermore, new members will have the option to reply directly to the automated message, opening a private channel of communication with the group administration or system without broadcasting initial exchanges to the entire group.

Platform Availability and Rollout Timeline

Implementation of the greeting feature is strictly optional. Administrators must proactively select the option within their group settings and author the text themselves, allowing flexibility across different community types ranging from private family circles to large public channels.
