WhatsApp Beta Introduces Restricted Chat Security Feature
WhatsApp is testing a new security feature called Restricted Chat on Android and iOS that directly replaces and upgrades the app’s previous Chat Privacy Protection settings, MobilMania.cz reported. The update restricts linked devices, web browsers, and Meta AI access within specific conversations to tighten user control over sensitive message threads.
How Restricted Chat Alters Device Access and Media Sharing
Activating Restricted Chat isolates a conversation thread to the user’s primary mobile phone. The setting immediately cuts off access from secondary mobile devices, desktop applications, and web browsers, blocking third-party clients and external AI agents from viewing the chat. MobilMania.cz noted that the feature also turns off automatic media downloads to the phone gallery, blocks chat history exports, and disables Meta AI functions inside the thread. Users who previously used the older privacy protection must turn on the new rules manually, as settings do not transfer automatically.
Unlike Chat Lock—which hides conversations behind biometrics in a secure folder—Restricted Chat governs how participants handle content inside the active thread. All chat members and group administrators receive a system notification whenever the feature is turned on or off. Turning the feature off later leaves previously exchanged messages and media protected under the original rules, meaning older photos do not automatically download to the device gallery. Group administrators can control whether every member or only admins are allowed to change these privacy settings.
Meta emphasizes that standard chats and calls remain private and end-to-end encrypted even without the expanded protection enabled. The Restricted Chat feature currently runs in the WhatsApp beta for Android and is rolling out gradually to iOS users before a wider public release.
