WhatsApp Phone Compatibility Changes Arrive in Late 2026
WhatsApp will drop support for older smartphones running outdated Android and iOS versions beginning October 31, 2026, according to an official support center update reported by concierto.cl. The phased rollout targets devices that no longer receive manufacturer software updates, requiring specific operating system baselines to maintain access to the messaging platform.
Android Cutoff Dates and Affected Samsung, Motorola, LG, and Sony Devices
Android devices must run version 6.0 or later starting October 31, 2026. The shift affects several legacy smartphone models across major manufacturers. Devices potentially facing compatibility issues include Samsung’s Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Core, Galaxy Trend, and Galaxy Trend Lite. Motorola users running the first-generation Moto G, first-generation Moto E, and Droid Razr HD may also lose access. LG models on the watch list comprise the Optimus G, Optimus L5, Optimus L7, Optimus F7, Lucid 2, Nexus 4, and G2 Mini, alongside Sony’s Xperia Z and Xperia SP.
Apple Devices Face a November 2026 Transition Date
Apple devices face a separate transition date on November 30, 2026, requiring iOS 15.5 or a newer release. The staggered deadlines mean the October date does not mark a simultaneous cutoff across both mobile operating systems. Users must verify their installed software version through device settings to determine if an upgrade is possible before the deadlines take effect.
Users Can Check Versions and Backup Chat History
Android users can check their system details by opening Settings, selecting “About Phone,” and locating the Android version or software information field. iPhone owners check their iOS version through Settings, General, and Information. To prevent data loss if a device cannot be updated, users can create a backup by going to WhatsApp Settings, selecting Chats, and tapping chat backup to store information on Google Drive for Android or iCloud for Apple devices. Account registration remains active if the user keeps their phone number, allowing chat restoration on a compatible handset.
