WhatsApp Rolls Out Optional Usernames to Hide Phone Numbers
The feature, which is rolling out globally over the coming months following initial reservation phases, shifts how users interact with strangers on the Meta-owned messaging platform.
According to the Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfalen, the consumer protection center in North Rhine-Westphalia, the new usernames are entirely optional. Users can choose to reserve a name now or ignore the feature completely without losing standard account functionality. Those who secure a handle receive an in-app notification when the system officially activates on their account.
Shielding Personal Data in Group Chats
When a user adopts a pseudonym instead of their real name, that handle displays in group chats and interactions with strangers instead of the underlying mobile number. According to consumer advocates, this reduction in visibility protects users from certain forms of harassment and fraud. Strangers who cannot view a personal phone number lose the ability to send unsolicited text messages or drag accounts into unauthorized group chats.
Corporate Tracking and Meta Integration Risks
However, privacy advocates note that the feature does not make users anonymous to Meta. According to the Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfalen, linking a mobile number remains a mandatory requirement for maintaining a WhatsApp account. The platform and its parent company, Meta, continue to collect user numbers regardless of whether a public handle is active.
Furthermore, consumer watchdogs warn that choosing a real name or reusing handles across Meta properties introduces new tracking risks. If users link their WhatsApp accounts to existing profiles on Instagram or Facebook, it facilitates cross-platform profiling and data consolidation by the corporate parent.
Strict Configuration Rules and Security Keys
To establish strict control over who can initiate contact, privacy advocates advise users to set up a usernames key. This security measure requires contacts to input a specific PIN code provided by the account holder before they can message via the handle.
WhatsApp enforces strict formatting requirements for handles:
- Lengths must fall between 3 and 35 characters.
- Accepted characters include lowercase letters (a through z), numbers, underscores, and periods.
- Handles cannot consist solely of digits.
Industry Standards and Competitor Landscape
According to industry releases, Signal introduced universal usernames for its user base in March 2024, allowing individuals to connect without exchanging phone numbers.
