According to regional reports and researchers, states across the West and Midwest—including Minnesota, North Dakota, and Colorado—are seeing steep declines in pesky insects, yet public health authorities warn that the dry weather is paradoxically increasing the transmission risk of the potentially deadly West Nile virus.

Drought Drives Down Mosquito Numbers Across the West and Midwest

Mosquito levels are down by half across several western and Midwestern states this year, according to regional data cited by Inkl. In Colorado, populations have plunged by up to 70 percent following a severe spring drought. Kahiti Stierley-Nunez, a Minnesota resident who moved from California four years ago, told The Minneapolis Tribune that she hasn’t needed to use bug spray at all throughout the summer.

While dry conditions provide a temporary reprieve from biting pests, scientists emphasize that trillions of mosquitoes still inhabit the U.S. Robert Hancock, a professor at Metropolitan State University Denver specializing in mosquito behavior, noted that a single blood meal allows the insects to reproduce explosively by producing upwards of 180 eggs.

Why Drought Increases West Nile Virus Transmission Risk

Despite the sharp drop in overall mosquito numbers, federal and academic experts warn that the risk of contracting vector-borne illnesses is rising. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. cases of West Nile virus have reached a 22-year high, with 143 cases reported nationwide so far this year.

The paradox lies in how shrinking water sources alter animal behavior. Matthew Aliota, a professor at the University of Minnesota who specializes in these kinds of viruses, explained to The Independent that drought conditions concentrate both mosquitoes and birds—which serve as the primary host reservoir for the virus—around remaining water sources. This close proximity accelerates transmission rates.

West Nile virus was introduced to the U.S. from the Middle East in 1999 by migrating white storks and spread to all contiguous states by 2004, causing approximately 32,000 cases since the virus reached the U.S. and more than 130 deaths annually in the contiguous U.S. Severe infections can trigger critical health complications, including high fevers, tremors, vision loss, paralysis, comas, and inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

Geographic Hotspots and Severe Symptoms

Arizona is currently bearing the brunt of the outbreak, accounting for roughly half of the nation’s reported cases alongside five state deaths, according to CDC tracking data. High case numbers are also clustered in neighboring Colorado and Utah.
