To pinpoint the roots of this distortion, researchers ran six experiments. Participants were asked to react to fictional scenarios, including a city under attack by various monsters. The results were stark: people are significantly more likely to circulate content they have seen the least frequently. This confirms that the behavior is not merely a byproduct of platform algorithms, but a fundamental human preference for the novel.

“There is a bias that we simply cannot fix,” says Jang. Even when users understand the mechanics of their own impulses, the drive to share the out-of-the-ordinary remains a constant force in online interaction.
