Air conditioning units do more than lower the temperature; they actively strip moisture from the air as warm indoor air passes over cold evaporator coils. When residents drop thermostats into the low 70s or high 60s while outdoor dew points remain high, the home’s drywall, insulation, and framing materials can chill below the indoor dew point, according to guidelines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This thermal imbalance creates condensation on interior surfaces, providing the ideal moisture levels for mold colonies to establish within 24 to 48 hours.

Beyond moisture risks, overcooling strains mechanical components and drives up monthly utility bills. FPL data indicates that cooling accounts for the largest share of an average Florida home’s electricity consumption. Every degree lowered below the 78-degree baseline increases cooling costs by approximately six to eight percent. Continuous runtime also accelerates wear on blower motors and capacitors, leading to premature equipment failure during peak seasonal transitions.
