Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras is shouldering every inning of a high-stakes postseason run while staring down a ticking clock on his tenure in Wisconsin. Speaking on Master Flip toward the close of the regular season, the 28-year-old addressed his long-term future and admitted he remains unsure whether he will remain in Milwaukee past the expiration of his contract control in 2027.
Contreras Hits Home Runs to Lead Brewers Series Lead
Contreras has started all three National League Division Series games against the San Diego Padres behind the plate, anchoring the diamond from the crucial No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the order at American Family Field and Petco Park.
In Game 1, he delivered a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh inning to seal a 3-2 victory. He struck again in Game 3 with another solo shot in the fourth inning. The Brewers head into Wednesday’s Game 4 in San Diego holding a two-games-to-one series lead, one win away from advancing with Contreras slated to catch a bullpen game.
The Iron Man Behind the Plate
Acquired in late 2022 via the blockbuster three-team trade that sent Sean Murphy elsewhere, Contreras quickly transformed into an everyday fixture. He has logged at least 140 games in every single season since arriving in the organization.
Across 147 regular-season games, he posted a .270 batting average, a .341 on-base percentage, and a .417 slugging percentage for a .758 OPS, accompanied by 18 home runs and 94 RBIs. Though that stat line marks a slight dip from his earlier peak production in Milwaukee, it stands as elite output for the catcher position.

Contreras Faces Free Agency After 2027 Season
Contreras remains under team control through the 2027 season, after which he is headed for unrestricted free agency barring an extension. During his Master Flip interview, he acknowledged that large-market organizations such as the New York Yankees could pursue his services once he reaches the open market.
He also nodded to the organization’s farm system, specifically mentioning soon-to-be 24-year-old catching prospect Jeferson Quero as a factor in the club’s future calculations. Even so, club officials and Contreras still have a window to negotiate a contract extension before free agency arrives.
