His church brought him to Wilmington, but as Clifford Barnett sees it, God gave him a greater purpose.
Barnett, Wilmington’s mayor pro tempore, was appointed by a bishop to be pastor of Warner Temple AME Zion Church on Nov. 1, 2009. Tho, he believes an even greater hand intervened after that.
“Bishops make appointments, but God sets up the assignments,” said Barnett.
Part of that assignment, Barnett believes, was to serve on the Wilmington City Council.
Having never served in public office before, barnett said he didn’t run for a seat on the City Council eight years ago in pursuit of political fame, but at the urging of the community. Now, having fallen short in his reelection bid, Barnett is nearing the end of his second four-year term. his final day in office will be Dec.2.

Mayor Bill Saffo lauded Barnett as “an outstanding citizen, an outstanding individual and an outstanding man of faith,” emphasizing his consistent support for the Wilmington community. Saffo described Barnett as “a solid rock for this community for many years.”
Barnett himself described his time on the council as a fulfilling, though sometimes challenging, experience. he characterized his role as a “bridge builder,” dedicated to fostering collaboration and finding common ground amongst differing viewpoints.
“What I like best about serving on the council is finding solutions to problems,” barnett stated.While he enjoyed the process of addressing city issues, he jokingly admitted to not enjoying the extensive planning required. “A good deal of study and preparation goes into the work people see council members do during public meetings,” he explained.
Barnett moved to Wilmington on February 1, 2010, and plans to remain actively involved in the community following his departure from the council. He and his wife are expecting their first grandchild in April, a development he expressed excitement about.
When asked if he would miss his time on the City Council, Barnett responded with a heartfelt, “Sure, I’m going to miss it… I just enjoyed the journey.”
