Windows 11 Gains Built-In Speed Test Tool, Initially Powered by Bing
Microsoft is rolling out a new network speed test tool directly within Windows 11, offering users a convenient way to check their internet performance without relying on third-party applications or websites. The feature, currently available to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel, aims to simplify the process of gauging internet speed and identifying potential connectivity issues.
How the New Speed Test Works
The integrated speed test is accessible via an icon in the Windows 11 taskbar. Clicking the icon redirects users to Microsoft’s Bing website to initiate the test. The tool measures download and upload speeds, as well as latency, providing a comprehensive overview of the user’s internet connection.
Bing and Ookla Collaboration
Although the test is launched through Bing, the backend processing is actually powered by Ookla, the company behind the popular Speedtest.net platform. This collaboration leverages Ookla’s established infrastructure and reliable testing methodologies.
Comparison to Existing Speed Test Tools
Currently, the Windows 11 speed test functions as a convenient shortcut to the Bing-powered tool. Users who prefer a more integrated experience or require detailed network data may still opt for dedicated applications like Ookla’s Speedtest, which is also available as a Microsoft Store app. These apps often provide more granular results and additional network diagnostics.
Future Development and Potential Improvements
Microsoft could enhance the functionality by developing a fully integrated tool that delivers results directly within the Windows 11 interface, rather than redirecting users to a web page. This would streamline the process and provide a more seamless user experience. Currently, several speed test apps are available in the Microsoft Store, offering integrated testing within Windows.
Availability
The speed test feature is currently being tested with Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel and is expected to be rolled out to all Windows 11 users in the near future. It was previously available to Canary, Dev, and Beta build users.
This new feature provides a readily accessible option for users to quickly assess their internet speed, potentially increasing awareness of available bandwidth and helping to troubleshoot connectivity problems.
