Major Winter Storm Batters Northeastern Ontario, Triggering Highway Closures and Power Outages

A severe winter storm is unleashing hazardous conditions across northeastern Ontario, prompting widespread highway closures, power outages, and urgent warnings from Environment Canada. The storm, impacting areas from Sault Ste. Marie to Wawa and beyond, is bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and near-zero visibility, making travel extremely dangerous.

Storm Details and Warnings

As of 11:17 AM EDT on Monday, March 16, 2026, Environment Canada has issued an orange warning for a major winter storm. Total snowfall accumulations of 20 to 30 cm are expected in the Wawa – Pukaskwa Park region, with up to 50 cm possible in the Sault and surrounding areas, stretching north to Wawa and east to St. Joseph Island . Northeasterly wind gusts are reaching 70 to 80 km/h, creating blizzard-like conditions.

The storm is expected to continue through tonight, with snow tapering off to light snow overnight. However, the immediate threat remains high, with near-zero visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow. There is also a chance of ice pellets mixing with the snow along a line from Sault Ste. Marie to Kirkland Lake, potentially reducing total snowfall amounts.

Travel Disruptions and Road Closures

Multiple highways throughout northeastern Ontario have been shut down due to the hazardous conditions. Travel is described as “extremely hazardous” and “impassable” on some routes . Road closures are possible and are already in effect in many areas. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid non-essential travel.

Power Outages and Infrastructure Concerns

Prolonged and widespread utility outages are likely due to the heavy snow and strong winds. The weight of the snow also poses a risk of roof collapse . Residents are urged to prepare for disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities.

Current Conditions in Wawa

As of 11:00 AM EDT on Monday, March 16, 2026, the Wawa Airport is reporting heavy snow showers and blowing snow. The temperature is -17.5°C with a wind chill of -29°C. Visibility is severely limited at 0.4 km . The wind is from the North-Northeast at 26 km/h, gusting to 52 km/h.

Safety Recommendations

Environment Canada and local authorities are urging residents to:

  • Avoid non-essential travel and outdoor activities.
  • Prepare for prolonged disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities.
  • Monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
  • Report severe weather to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or post reports on X using #ONStorm.

Looking Ahead

The storm is expected to continue impacting the region through tonight. Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Continued monitoring of weather updates is crucial as conditions can change rapidly.
