Western Michigan University Volleyball Closes Homestand Against Buffalo

Western Michigan University hosts the University at Buffalo for a two-match Mid-American Conference series on Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24, at University Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Broncos enter the weekend with a 13-6 overall record and a 6-3 conference mark, riding a 12-match home winning streak that includes a 7-0 record at University Arena this season. Buffalo arrives on a two-match losing slide, standing outside the conference’s top six with an 11-8 overall record and 3-5 MAC standing.

Broncos Sweep Toledo to Fuel Home Momentum

Western Michigan secured a two-match sweep over Toledo last weekend at University Arena, defeating the Rockets in four sets on Friday before securing a straight-set victory on Saturday. That sweep handed Toledo its first two conference losses of the season and extended WMU’s home dominance under head coach Colleen Munson, who holds a 188-63 home record at the helm of the program. Buffalo enters the matchup looking to rebound after dropping consecutive contests, though the Bulls are third in the conference at 2.20 blocks per set under setter Maddie Mitchell and hitter Manoela Forlin.

Leah Richmond and Gabby Weihe Earn Conference Honors

Setter Leah Richmond and middle blocker Gabby Weihe claimed MAC Player of the Week honors for the second time this season following the sweep over Toledo. Richmond earned Setter of the Week by totaling 78 assists—averaging 11.14 per set—and directing a Bronco offense that hit .280 across the two matches, culminating in a season-best .374 hitting percentage on Saturday. Weihe captured Offensive Player of the Week after recording 28 kills at a 4.00 per-set clip on a .400 hitting percentage, making her the first conference player this season to collect both an Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week award.

Leah Richmond Nears 2,000 Career Assists Milestone

Leah Richmond enters the weekend series with 1,956 career assists, sitting 44 assists away from the 2,000-assist milestone for her collegiate career. Richmond currently leads the MAC and ranks 29th in NCAA Division I with 10.36 assists per set, anchoring an offense that ranks second in the conference and 50th nationally with a .253 hitting percentage. Western Michigan holds a commanding 32-6 all-time series lead against Buffalo, having swept both meetings in Buffalo last season while splitting two matches during UB’s last visit to Kalamazoo in 2024.

Western Michigan Hosts Buffalo on Oct. 23 and 24

The first match between Western Michigan and Buffalo is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m., followed by the second match on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. Both contests take place at University Arena in Kalamazoo, with live stats, video broadcasts, and ticket information available through WMU athletics.
