The native of Meissen became famous with his hometown group in 1979, when he and his colleagues released the aforementioned hits. Dschinghis Khan’s song was then ranked fourth in the Eurovision Song Contest, and even climbed to the top of the Israeli charts.
The band broke up in 1985. Although after twenty years the former bandmates announced a comeback, Heichel left the formation again in 2014.
According to Bild newspaper the singer last stayed at Lake Constance. The paper learned from private sources that the private funeral, attended only by those closest to the deceased, took place on Wednesday, February 11.
