Unexpected Delivery Behind Prison Walls
A 22-year-old woman gave birth to a baby girl in a restroom at the Beau-Bassin Prison on Thursday, June 25. The mother, Luxmee Devi Garibdas, had been visiting her concubin, who has been incarcerated for one month, when she experienced sudden, intense contractions.
What began as a standard visitation quickly shifted into an emergency. Realizing the speed of her labor, Garibdas sought privacy in a restroom, where she was forced to deliver the child on-site.
Sergeant Appasamy Leads Emergency Effort
Prison staff immediately pivoted from security protocols to emergency medical support. Sergeant Seevananda Appasamy answered the woman’s calls for help, taking charge of the delivery within the confines of the facility. He remained with the newborn until professional paramedics arrived to take over the care of the mother and child.

Stable Condition at Candos Hospital
Following the delivery, an ambulance transported the pair to Candos Hospital. Medical staff performed standard evaluations, confirming the pregnancy had reached full term. Hospital officials reported that both the mother and infant are in good health.
A Father’s Distance
The father of the child, a 26-year-old man who has been held at the facility for approximately one month, was notified of the birth by prison officers shortly after the event. Despite his restricted circumstances, the father expressed significant emotion regarding the arrival of his daughter. Reports from the facility indicate that he described the birth as a source of immense happiness, even while remaining separated from his family.
Operational Security Maintained
For the staff at Beau-Bassin, the birth was a rare deviation from their daily routine. While the facility maintains basic first-aid protocols, an unassisted delivery of this nature is highly unusual. Officials confirmed there were no disruptions to the prison’s operational security, crediting the staff’s quick transition to emergency assistance for the safe outcome.
