Tralee District Court convicted Catherine McElligot (44), of Knockbrane, Lixnaw, County Kerry, for laundering €10,000. The conviction stems from sharing her bank card and allowing funds to be withdrawn by individuals described as having “nefarious backgrounds,” according to Sergeant Chris Manton’s testimony in court on Wednesday.

Details of the Offense

The court heard that Ms. McElligot facilitated payments to a criminal organization totaling €10,000 between October 17 and October 18, 2024. These payments were made in four transactions: €4,600 on October 17th, and €400, €700, and €4,300 on October 18th. Judge David Waters presided over the case and delivered the conviction.

Defense and Prosecution Arguments

Solicitor Pat Mann, representing Ms. McElligot, stated that she shared her card to assist her son. Yet, Judge Waters emphasized that Ms. McElligot “knowingly gave her card to this criminal organisation.” Mr. Mann further noted that Ms. McElligot reported facing intimidation when attempting to retrieve her card and believes she is the only individual being prosecuted in connection with the scheme.

Broader Investigation and Concerns

Sergeant Manton highlighted that Gardaí (Irish police) are conducting a wider investigation into money laundering activities. He expressed concern that money laundering is often misrepresented to young people as a victimless crime, leading to serious criminal charges in higher courts. Judge Waters underscored that allowing access to one’s bank account for criminal activity is not a victimless act.

Mitigating Factors and Adjournment

The court acknowledged that Ms. McElligot had no prior criminal record and had been cooperative with the investigation. Solicitor Mann suggested the situation began “innocently in the beginning and then landed herself in bother.” The case has been adjourned to April 15 for sentencing.
