West Texas A&M University Joins System-Wide AI Learnathon

CANYON, Texas — West Texas A&M University (WT) is participating in the 2026 AI Learnathon, a month-long initiative designed to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) literacy among faculty and staff across The Texas A&M University System. The Learnathon begins March 27, National AI Literacy Day, and continues through April 30, 2026.

Building AI Literacy Across the System

The AI Learnathon aims to build foundational AI literacy and institutional readiness through responsible, hands-on engagement with emerging AI tools. Faculty and staff will have access to practical learning experiences designed to integrate AI into their perform, both in the classroom and beyond. The Texas A&M University System initiated the Learnathon to support responsible, practical engagement with AI.

Learning Opportunities and Key Dates

Participants can enroll in Learnathon events through April 11, including courses offered by Grow with Google, such as AI Essentials and Prompting Essentials. WT students have been utilizing Grow with Google courses since spring 2025. Key dates during the Learnathon include:

  • March 27: National AI Literacy Day – Learnathon begins
  • April 2: CATIE’s Ignite Faculty Virtual Town Hall Webinar (AI in teaching & learning)
  • April 9-10: Chancellor’s Faculty Innovation & Impact Symposium
  • April 13-17: National AI Week
  • April 22: Texas A&M University System’s AI Symposium with Grammarly

System-Wide Collaboration and Innovation

The System’s Council on Academic Technology and Innovative Education Faculty Innovation Task Force will host a webinar on April 2 to showcase faculty innovations in teaching and learning, including examples of AI-enabled instructional practices. The Chancellor’s Faculty Innovation and Impact Symposium will further reinforce these efforts. Google will lead panels highlighting Google Career Certificates and AI offerings, although Grammarly and the Association of College and University Educators will focus on effective and ethical AI utilize in education.

Alignment with WT’s Long-Range Plan

The AI Learnathon supports WT’s long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World, which prioritizes building academic excellence. This initiative is also fueled by the One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which has surpassed its initial $125 million goal, raising over $175 million.
