New Mixed-Use Building in Bern Combines Living, Care, and Social Services

Bern, Switzerland – A new building in the Wyler district of Bern is redefining urban living by integrating residential apartments, care facilities, and social services under one roof. The project, designed to foster a socially inclusive environment, features a distinctive facade and a focus on community integration.

Design and Architecture

The building’s design emphasizes a clear urban development along the railway line, contributing to the positive evolution of the Wyler district. A grid of horizontal and vertical lines defines the structure, filled with ceramic tiles and windows. The ceramic surfaces exhibit varying color nuances based on the building’s use, creating a unique and slightly undulating texture that gives the building its individual identity.

Affordable Housing and Daycare Facilities

The eastern portion of the building houses 34 non-profit rental apartments, providing affordable housing options for individuals with modest incomes. The ground floor features a municipal daycare center, designed to be accessible and welcoming to the surrounding neighborhood with a playful outdoor space.

Daycare Center Features

The daycare center is thoughtfully structured for ease of navigation and includes three playgroups, each with dedicated side rooms. Additional amenities include a common room, an exercise room, and a workroom. A direct internal connection to the care center’s restaurant allows for convenient meal service. The daycare’s graduated volumetrics help to seamlessly integrate the different uses and promote a family-friendly atmosphere within the neighborhood.

The building has been the subject of architectural photography by Damian Poffet, showcasing its design and integration into the urban landscape.
