Xbox Announces Disc-to-Digital Feature to Convert Physical Games

Microsoft is launching a new disc-to-digital feature for Xbox consoles starting August 31, allowing players to convert physical game discs into digital entitlements.

How the Xbox Disc-to-Digital Program Works

According to Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox, the system is designed to bridge physical and digital libraries. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. Microsoft is launching the test phase with Xbox Insider testers on August 31, followed by a broader public rollout in the coming months. Thousands of titles will be supported at launch, though original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are excluded from the initial release.

Licensing Terms and Ownership Restrictions

While the conversion process grants access to digital benefits like Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, the underlying license includes strict limitations. If a user trades, sells, or lends the physical disc to another person who then claims the entitlement, the previous owner’s digital access gets revoked. This mechanism prevents a single physical copy from generating multiple permanent digital backups.

Industry Context and Physical Media Shifts

The rollout arrives just weeks after Sony announced it is ending the manufacture of physical PlayStation game discs for new releases after January 2028. While Sony has not introduced a conversion program for existing physical libraries, Microsoft’s initiative places it directly into the ongoing debate over digital access and media longevity. Publishers retain control over which games participate in the program, meaning not every title in a player’s physical collection will be immediately eligible for conversion.
