Xbox Project Helix: Microsoft Confirms Next-Gen Family of Devices

Xbox head Asha Sharma confirmed that Microsoft’s next-generation hardware platform, code-named Project Helix, will launch as a broad family of devices rather than a single standalone console. According to an interview with the BBC, Sharma stated that Microsoft has been working on a “formidable next generation and a great family of devices for Helix,” shifting the brand’s strategy away from a unified console model toward a modular hardware ecosystem.

Project Helix Shifts From Single Console to Hardware Family

Project Helix was initially framed by Microsoft executives as a singular, hybrid machine combining console and PC gaming architectures. During the Game Developers Conference in March 2026, vice-president Jason Ronald described Helix as an upcoming first-party system built on a custom AMD system-on-a-chip. However, according to recent statements by Asha Sharma to the BBC, the project now encompasses multiple form factors designed to target different price points and performance tiers. This pivot aligns with a custom silicon supply agreement signed between Microsoft and AMD in June 2025, which laid the groundwork for a diversified lineup of proprietary and partner hardware.

Hardware Lineup Speculation and Pricing Pressures

While Microsoft has not released finalized specifications or a definitive price list, industry analysts expect the company to adopt a tiered pricing model similar to the current generation’s split between the Xbox Series X and the budget-friendly Xbox Series S. Rising hardware manufacturing costs have pushed premium gaming estimates toward the $1,000 threshold, making an accessible entry-level device crucial for market penetration. Furthermore, Sharma emphasized the ongoing importance of affordable entry points in a separate interview with Play Day One, noting that hardware accessibility remains a priority as major titles like Grand Theft Auto VI approach release.

Speculation surrounding the Helix ecosystem also includes potential handheld gaming devices and OEM machines built in collaboration with third-party manufacturers like Asus and MSI. Microsoft previously partnered with Asus on the Xbox Ally portable PC line, establishing a precedent for expanding the Xbox brand beyond traditional living room hardware. Development timelines remain open, with Jason Ronald previously indicating that alpha developer kits for Project Helix are slated for distribution starting in 2027, pointing toward a consumer release window in late 2027 or 2028.
