Xiaomi 17 Ultra: A Deep Dive into Leica’s Latest Collaboration
Xiaomi has unveiled the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, a flagship smartphone developed in close partnership with Leica. The device boasts an ambitious camera system, featuring a 1-inch main sensor, a 200MP telephoto lens with mechanical zoom, and advanced video capabilities. Xiaomi positions this as its most photography-focused phone to date.
Camera System: A Leica Co-Engineering Effort
At the core of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s camera system is a 50MP Leica 1-inch “Ultra Dynamic” main camera, utilizing the new Light Fusion 1050L sensor with LOFIC HDR technology. This sensor is designed to enhance dynamic range and improve color accuracy, particularly in high-contrast scenes.[1]
Complementing the main sensor is a 200MP Leica telephoto camera offering a 75–100mm mechanical optical zoom range and up to 400mm (17.2x) optical-level zoom without significant in-sensor cropping. [3] The optics incorporate a 1G+6P hybrid lens design with multi-layer coatings to minimize ghosting and color fringing. Notably, the telephoto module features Leica’s first APO optical lens in a flagship smartphone. [3]
The ultra-wide camera features a 50MP Samsung JN5 sensor, a 14mm-equivalent lens at f/2.2, and a 115-degree field of view. The selfie camera similarly utilizes a 50MP sensor with an f/2.2 lens at a 21mm equivalent focal length. [3]
Video Capabilities
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra significantly upgrades video recording capabilities, supporting 8K at 30fps and 4K at 120fps with Dolby Vision. It also offers 4K 120fps Log recording with ACES color encoding, providing creators with greater flexibility in post-production color grading. [3]
Design and Display
Despite housing large sensors and a 6000mAh battery, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is Xiaomi’s thinnest and lightest Ultra model yet, measuring 8.29mm thick. It features a flat 6.9-inch HyperRGB OLED display with 2K resolution, a 1–120Hz LTPO refresh rate, and a peak brightness of up to 3500 nits.
Performance and Battery
Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. A 3D Dual-Channel IceLoop cooling system ensures stable performance during prolonged shooting sessions. Charging options include 90W wired and 50W wireless charging.
Leica Leitzphone Edition and Accessories
Xiaomi also offers a Leica Leitzphone edition, featuring distinctive Leica design elements and branding.[1] Upgraded Photography Kits are available, including a Pro version with a built-in 2000mAh battery and a Leica-inspired grip.[1]
Availability
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is easily one of the best phones not officially available in the United States.[1]
If previous Ultra models focused on pushing technological boundaries, the 17 Ultra appears more refined, prioritizing larger sensors, smarter optics, and tools tailored for photographers who value color science and detailed imagery. Real-world testing will determine if it lives up to its potential, but the specifications suggest a compelling flagship device.
