Expectant mothers visiting Ubungo District Hospital in Dar es Salaam face resource constraints as the facility handles nearly 150 pregnant women every month during the low season. To help bridge this gap, employees of Yas Tanzania donated a range of medical supplies and equipment through the employee-led Tumaini Campaign.
Maternal Health Demands at Ubungo District Hospital
Ubungo District Hospital manages a high volume of patients seeking antenatal care, delivery services, and postpartum support. During slower months, the facility records roughly 150 expectant mothers monthly, with about half of those patients requiring surgical intervention, according to Ubungo District Hospital Medical Officer in Charge Dr. Chrispin Kayola.
The donation includes maternity examination beds, wheelchairs, bedsheets, aprons, maternity kits, and khangas, according to coverage from The Respondents.
Corporate Social Responsibility Through the Tumaini Campaign
The donation stems from the Tumaini Campaign, an internal initiative created by workers at Yas Tanzania who wanted to contribute directly to community welfare beyond their day-to-day job duties. Yas Tanzania Chief Human Resources Officer Caroline Kavishe stated that the campaign empowers staff to stand beside expectant mothers during a critical life stage.
“Tumaini is driven by our employees, who have chosen to stand with expectant mothers during one of the most important moments in their lives,” Ms. Kavishe said, as noted by The Respondents.
Rukia Mtingwa, Yas Tanzania External Affairs Manager for Government Relations and Regulatory Affairs, explained that the initiative addresses the anxieties and physical challenges women encounter during pregnancy and childbirth.
Expanding Community Support Across Tanzania
Yas executives frame the employee-led drive as part of the company’s broader philosophy known as Mtandao wa Viwango. According to Ms. Mtingwa, this concept extends past standard telecommunications and internet services to encompass high standards in corporate citizenship and community investment.
Following the initial handover at Ubungo District Hospital, the Tumaini Campaign organizers plan to expand the outreach effort to other regions across Tanzania. This expansion will allow more Yas employees to participate in local community projects and provide targeted assistance to vulnerable groups, including expectant mothers in under-resourced medical facilities.
