Ilker Çatak’s ‘Yellow Letters’ Wins Golden Bear at Berlin Film Festival

German Turkish director İlker Çatak’s drama, Yellow Letters, has been awarded the Golden Bear, the top prize at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival. The film, which explores the repercussions of political persecution on two Turkish theater artists, resonated with the jury and sparked conversation about authoritarianism and artistic freedom.

A Story of Political Persecution

Yellow Letters centers on Derya (Özgü Namal) and Aziz (Tansu Biçer), a couple working in the Ankara theater scene. Their lives are upended when they receive dismissal notices – the “yellow letters” of the title – due to their political views. The film depicts the surveillance, discrediting and exclusion tactics employed by autocratic states to silence dissent, and the impact on the couple and their daughter.

Filmed in Germany, Reflecting Universal Themes

Despite being set in Turkey, Yellow Letters was filmed entirely in Germany, with Berlin standing in for Ankara and Hamburg for Istanbul. Director İlker Çatak deliberately chose this approach, not out of fear of reprisal from Turkish authorities, but to emphasize the film’s “universal” themes. The use of Berlin and Hamburg as stand-ins prompts viewers to consider whether similar political developments could occur in their own countries. The Guardian notes this deliberate choice encourages a “thought experiment” about the potential for creeping authoritarianism.

Recognition and Praise from the Jury

Jury president Wim Wenders described the film as giving the jury “chills” with its warning of “signs of despotism” and a potential threat of repression in various countries. Wenders praised the film’s portrayal of “the political language of totalitarianism as opposed to the empathetic language of cinema.” The Hollywood Reporter reports that this win makes Çatak the first German director to win the Golden Bear since Fatih Akin in 2004.
