A24 Launches Unprecedented Oscar Campaign for You Can See Everything

You Can See Everything is testing the boundaries of the Academy Awards by launching an awards campaign that targets categories no documentary has ever entered.

The film follows Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes inviting a film crew to document her final 34 days before beginning an 11-year federal prison sentence in Bryan, Texas, for wire fraud and conspiracy, as reported by Vulture.

You Can See Everything earns $15 million

The film opened over a weekend to $15 million across 800 screens with 2,000 sold-out shows, according to Variety. Variety reported that the movie plays as hangout-movie vérité until Amanda Seyfried appears on screen. Seyfried previously played Holmes in the 2022 television miniseries The Dropout and returns in You Can See Everything to reprise the role as herself.

Cinematographer David Bolen and film editor Adam Locke-Norton join Canadian costume designer Katina Danabassis on the submission list for technical categories. Oppenheim pushed the production team to capture intimate and often awkward interactions, according to details shared by Bolen on Vulture.

Historical Context of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos

The documentary arrives years after the collapse of Holmes’s blood-testing startup. In 2014, Holmes raised millions by claiming her proprietary technology could screen for hundreds of diseases using a few drops of blood from a finger prick, cbc.ca reported. By 2022, Theranos dissolved, and federal courts convicted Holmes of defrauding investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Oppenheim and Fielder spent a month filming Holmes before her surrender to federal prison in Texas. Fielder acts as a tricksterish inquisitor during close-up conversations, pushing Holmes on how she could persistently deny wrongdoing despite the fraud convictions, as detailed by Variety.
