YouTube Surpasses Disney to Become the World’s Largest Media Company
YouTube’s cultural influence is undeniable, and 2025 marked a pivotal year for the Google-owned video platform: it officially became the world’s largest media company.
Revenue Growth and Market Valuation
In 2025, YouTube generated over $60 billion in revenue, as reported by its parent company, Alphabet in its 2025 Q4 Earnings Call. Financial research firm MoffettNathanson estimates YouTube’s revenue at $62 billion, surpassing The Walt Disney Co.’s $60.9 billion in revenue for the same period (excluding Disney’s experiences division).
MoffettNathanson, which previously declared YouTube the “fresh king of all media,” now values the platform between $500 billion and $560 billion – significantly higher than any traditional media competitor. As of early 2026, Netflix holds a market capitalization of approximately $409 billion according to Yahoo Finance.
Diversified Revenue Streams
YouTube’s success isn’t solely based on advertising. In 2025, ad revenue reached $11.4 billion in Q4, totaling over $40 billion for the year. However, a substantial portion of its income comes from subscriptions, including YouTube Premium, YouTube Music, NFL Sunday Ticket, and YouTube TV.
YouTube TV currently boasts around 10 million subscribers and is projected to overtake established pay-TV providers like Charter and Comcast in the coming years.
Supporting the Creator Economy
YouTube has distributed over $100 billion to creators, music companies, and media partners, highlighting its central role in the entertainment ecosystem. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan emphasized the platform’s commitment to creators, stating that YouTube focuses on helping them build audiences and businesses as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
AI and Future Growth
MoffettNathanson believes YouTube’s scale as a distributor, combined with its investment in artificial intelligence (AI) tools, will fuel continued growth. These AI tools empower creators to produce content more efficiently and at a faster pace.
Analysts suggest that YouTube uniquely sits at the intersection of media and technology, positioning it for sustained success. Mohan himself expressed his passion for both technology and storytelling, emphasizing the synergy between the two at YouTube.
Creators are already experimenting with AI tools to streamline tasks like set design, costume creation, makeup, and visual effects.
A Leader in a Changing Media Landscape
While many traditional media companies are facing challenges, YouTube and Netflix are demonstrating continued growth. YouTube’s revenue exceeded $50 billion in 2024 and surpassed $60 billion in 2025, with plans for more streamlined YouTube TV bundles and a thriving creator economy. The platform’s potential for further expansion remains significant.
