Burbank lot to host an employee screening of John Boorman’s 1981 Arthurian classic Excalibur, signaling a potential thaw in relations years after his acrimonious departure from the studio’s DC universe. According to reporting by Page Six, Snyder received a hero’s welcome at the event, where motion picture group employees and guests filled the house for a screening and a subsequent question-and-answer session with studio bosses Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy.

The surprise return took place on a Monday night, offering a morale boost to a studio workforce described by Page Six as working in “purgatory” amid ongoing corporate limbo. Warner Bros. Discovery is currently awaiting the resolution of an antitrust legal battle brought by a coalition of 12 state attorneys general attempting to block a proposed $110 billion merger involving Paramount. To combat low employee morale, De Luca and Abdy established regular movie nights celebrating the studio’s library. Patty Jenkins hosted a screening of Blade Runner the week prior, and Oliver Stone previously screened JFK.

Tensions and the History of the SnyderVerse
Snyder’s presence on the Burbank lot raised eyebrows among industry insiders given his tumultuous history with previous studio leadership. According to Page Six, the director held the reins of the DC universe for the better part of a decade. Relations frayed significantly after Snyder stepped away from 2017’s Justice League, leading Warner Bros. to bring in Joss Whedon to reshoot and reshape the film.
A fierce fan campaign demanding the release of Snyder’s original cut followed, resulting in years of online friction between supporters and studio executives. Snyder stated in 2021 that Warner Bros. had been “aggressively anti-Snyder” at the time. However, persistent fan advocacy eventually led to the 2021 release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO, which IGN’s Tom Jorgensen described as a “surprise vindication for the director and the fans that believed in his vision.” Shortly after that release, Snyder and Warner Bros. parted ways following arbitration and a quiet settlement.

StudioCanal parent company CANAL+ and WBD signed a new agreement in December, and Snyder is currently writing and directing a remake of the 1981 cult classic Escape From New York for StudioCanal.
Following his departure from Warner Bros., Snyder moved to Netflix, where he directed the movie Army of the Dead, launched the multimedia franchise Rebel Moon, and created the adult animated series Twilight of the Gods. Netflix subsequently dropped plans to move forward with any other Snyder projects related to Rebel Moon. Snyder has noted publicly that he would only return to direct another DC film if it were an adaptation of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns.
