The Ukrainian president said that he has accepted the US proposal to hold another round of negotiations, but at the same time he does not know whether the Russian delegation will join them.
The agenda of this meeting will be the issue of the territories – first of all, the US proposal to create a free economic zone in Donbass. According to Zelensky, both sides of the conflict are skeptical of this option.
“None of the countries supports the idea of creating a free economic zone – neither the Russians nor us. We have different opinions on this issue. And we agreed on the following: let’s return to this issue at the next meeting with an idea of what it could look like,” the president said.
Zelensky is demanding that the United States clearly state its position on who will control the buffer zone in eastern Ukraine.
“If this is our territory – and this is our territory – then the country to which it belongs must govern it,” emphasizes Zelensky.
The next round of negotiations will also include bilateral consultations between Ukraine and the United States. According to the head of state, the negotiating teams can consider proposals for post-war planning and focus on economic issues. For this purpose, the Minister of Economy Oleksiy Sobolev will be included in the delegation. He will discuss Ukraine’s “Prosperity Package” with the Americans.
As we will recall, on Saturday Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the United States for the first time proposed holding another round of trilateral negotiations to settle Russia’s war against Ukraine on its territory.
Zelensky also said that the US is proposing to end Russia’s war against Ukraine by the beginning of summer, as they will have another priority later – the congressional elections.
In addition, the president confirmed that during the negotiations in Abu Dhabi on February 4-5, it was not possible to resolve the territorial issue and the issue of the management of the ZANP so far.
During the February 4-5 talks, delegations from the United States of America, Ukraine and the Russian Federation discussed a number of outstanding issues, including methods of implementing the ceasefire and monitoring the cessation of hostilities.
