Sergey deineko, Hero of Ukraine, Killed in Action

Sergey deineko, a Hero of Ukraine and commander of the 1st Assault Brigade, died in battle on January 4, 2026. He perished near Bakhmut while defending Ukraine against Russian forces.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Deineko’s death, praising his courage and dedication to defending Ukraine’s sovereignty. Zelenskyy stated that Deineko consistently demonstrated remarkable leadership and bravery on the front lines.
Deineko received the title of Hero of Ukraine in March 2023 for his notable contributions to repelling the Russian invasion. He previously served as the Deputy Commander of the National Guard of Ukraine.
The 1st Assault Brigade, under Deineko’s command, actively participated in key battles, including the defense of Kyiv in the early stages of the war and subsequent offensives in the east. They gained a reputation for their effectiveness and resilience.
