Zelensky Removes Top Aide Amid Corruption Probe

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has removed his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, following a raid on his home as part of a sweeping corruption probe.

Yermak’s removal represents a significant challenge for Zelensky, who is currently managing a growing Russian offensive in the east while the United States, a key ally, proposes a peace plan that Ukraine fears will concede substantial territory to Russia.

yermak was scheduled to lead negotiations for Ukraine in the US this weekend, but those plans have been altered. Ukrainian security council secretary Rustem Umerov will now lead the talks, according to two senior Ukrainian officials who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

“The delegation is planning to meet with the American side at the end of this week,” a source said.

Just last week, Zelensky reaffirmed his confidence in Yermak by appointing him as Ukraine’s top negotiator, despite increasing pressure from opposition figures calling for his removal.

Yesterday, Zelensky announced in a video address: “The Office of the President of Ukraine will be reorganised. The head of the office, Andriy Yermak, has submitted his resignation.”

President Zelensky subsequently signed a decree dismissing Yermak.

Investigators from the National Anti-Corruption Agency (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office raided Yermak’s apartment yesterday morning as part of an ongoing investigation. Details of the investigation were not promptly released, but Yermak stated he is fully cooperating.

Yermak has been implicated in a $100 million kickback scheme within the strategic energy sector, uncovered by investigators earlier this month. This revelation has sparked public outrage as Russia intensifies attacks on ukraine’s power grid, causing blackouts and threatening winter heating outages.

In response to the scandal, Zelensky appealed for national unity.”If we lose our unity, we risk losing everything: ourselves, Ukraine, our future,” he stated in his address.

Zelensky indicated he will begin consultations today to identify a replacement for Yermak.

The scandal arises at a notably delicate time for the ukrainian leader. While yermak was Zelensky’s closest ally, he was a controversial figure in Ukraine, with critics alleging he has consolidated power and controlled access to the president.
