Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks Face Hurdles as Zelenskyy Accuses Russia of Delay Tactics

Geneva peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia have stalled, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accusing Moscow of employing delaying tactics as the four-year mark of the conflict approaches. The talks, mediated by the United States, concluded Wednesday after a mere two hours on the second day, revealing limited progress toward a resolution.

Zelenskyy’s Accusations and Concerns

Zelenskyy stated that Russia is attempting to prolong negotiations that “could have reached the final stage.” CBS News reports that Zelenskyy reiterated his firm stance that Ukraine’s sovereignty and internationally recognized borders are non-negotiable. He expressed these concerns in a social media post following the conclusion of the talks.

Difficult Discussions and Differing Positions

The two-day talks in Switzerland primarily focused on territorial issues, which remain the main obstacle to a peace agreement. TIME reported that the first day of negotiations lasted six hours and were described as “difficult” by Zelenskyy, who accused Russia of stalling. Rustem Umerov, head of the Ukrainian delegation, described the discussions as “intensive and substantive,” noting that security parameters and implementation mechanisms were discussed, but several issues remained unresolved.

Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky characterized the talks as “difficult, but businesslike,” indicating that another meeting would be scheduled soon. Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary, stated that “meaningful progress” had been made, and another round of talks would take place, though no specific date was given.

Territorial Disputes and International Pressure

Russian President Vladimir Putin has consistently demanded that Ukraine formally cede occupied territory in eastern Ukraine as a condition for peace. CBS News highlights that this demand remains a significant point of contention. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Ukraine to reach a deal, even suggesting concessions of territory, a position that has drawn criticism from Zelenskyy and NATO allies who warn against rewarding aggression.

EU Sanctions and Anniversary Looming

As the four-year anniversary of the conflict approaches on February 24th, the European Union has been unable to agree on a 20th package of sanctions against Russia, which could have included a full ban on maritime services for Russian crude oil exports. The Independent reports that this failure to reach an agreement comes as Zelenskyy expresses optimism about “real opportunities to end the war with dignity,” following trilateral negotiations in Geneva.

Looking Ahead

Zelenskyy indicated that the next round of discussions could occur “as early as this February,” but Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov could not confirm a date. The path to a peaceful resolution remains uncertain, with both sides holding firm on key demands and accusations of disappointing faith negotiations continuing.
