New Public Square to Transform Palermo’s Zen 2 Neighborhood
The Zen 2 neighborhood in Palermo is moving toward a significant urban transformation. In a recent presentation at the Laboratorio Zen Insieme association, officials unveiled the executive project for a new public square designed to replace a long-neglected, degraded space with a modern community hub.
The project, presented by Public Works Councilor Salvatore Orlando and architect Pasquale Riggio, aims to provide the neighborhood with its first true center for social interaction and civic participation. The timeline for the project is already in motion, with the tendering process scheduled to close on June 8. Pending technical requirements, construction is expected to begin by this autumn.
A Blueprint for Community Integration
For years, the site intended for the square has remained an unpaved, degraded area—a void that residents say symbolized the absence of institutional support. The new design replaces this neglect with a pedestrian-centric layout focused on quality of life and accessibility.
The future square will feature several key amenities:
- An amphitheater for public gatherings and events.
- A dedicated calisthenics area to promote health and fitness.
- Green spaces to improve the environmental quality of the area.
- A caffetteria and play areas to encourage social cohesion and family use.

Fabrizio Arena, president of Laboratorio Zen Insieme, emphasized that the square is not merely a construction project but a victory for a community that refused to surrender to abandonment. Arena noted that while Zen often appears in news headlines due to crime or “militarized” police presence—marked by the sound of helicopters overhead—this project highlights a different reality: a community that organizes itself to build opportunities for redemption.
