Zhao Xintong Secures Players Championship Title, Eyes World Championship Defense
Zhao Xintong defeated John Higgins 10-7 in the final of the 2026 Players Championship, held at the Telford International Centre in Telford, England, on February 22, 2026. This victory marks Xintong’s fifth career ranking title and his second consecutive triumph, following his win at the World Grand Prix in Hong Kong earlier in February.
Dominant Performance in Telford
Xintong, 28, showcased his skill with impressive breaks of 104, 126, and 92, sealing the victory against the veteran Higgins. The match was closely contested until late in the game, with the score tied at 7-7 before Xintong pulled ahead.
Back-to-Back Titles and Rising Star
This win makes Xintong the first player to win two ranking titles in the current World Snooker Tour campaign. He joins an elite group of players – Steve Davis, Mark Williams, and Neil Robertson – as only the fourth player to win their first five ranking finals. Xintong is now aiming to turn into the first player to win all three ‘Players Series’ events, with the Tour Championship in Manchester approaching in late March.
Higgins’ Praise and Future Prospects
Despite the loss, John Higgins, 51, acknowledged Xintong’s exceptional talent. “My dad always says he was lucky to see people like (football stars) George Best, Jimmy Johnstone and I’m sure my kids are lucky they’ve watched someone like Xintong, because he is a genius, an absolute genius,” Higgins said. He also predicted Xintong will be a strong contender at the World Championship this year.
Prize Money and Tournament Details
Zhao Xintong received £150,000 for winning the Players Championship, while John Higgins took home £70,000 as the runner-up. Semi-finalists each received £35,000, quarter-finalists £20,000, and first-round competitors £15,000. A £10,000 prize was awarded for the highest break. The total prize fund for the tournament was £500,000.
Looking Ahead: The Welsh Open
Snooker action continues with the Welsh Open, featuring Mark Selby, Kyren Wilson, and Zhao Xintong among the competitors. Selby is the number one seed, having won the tournament last year.
Xintong’s Perspective
“I still can’t believe it,” Xintong stated. “To win in Hong Kong and then be back to Telford to win again in the championship – this happened in a dream. I can’t believe that!” He emphasized his enjoyment of the game and the support of the fans, adding, “I don’t really suppose a lot, I just wish to enjoy snooker, enjoy the table and enjoy lots of fans being here to watch me play snooker.” He also expressed respect for veteran players like Higgins, Ronnie O’Sullivan, and Mark Williams.
