10% Annual Return: J.P. Morgan Issues First Long-Term Bitcoin Forecast

JPMorgan Issues First Decade-Long Bitcoin Return Forecast at 10% Annual Growth

J.P. Morgan Asset Management has issued its first 10-year return forecast for bitcoin, projecting a 10% compounded annual return while pointing to 55% volatility as a hurdle for mainstream portfolio adoption. The bank released the estimate in its 31st annual Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report, setting bitcoin’s expected gains against a projected 5.5% return for gold.

While the firm excludes bitcoin from its primary multi-asset pricing models, analysts constructed a separate covariance matrix comparing the cryptocurrency with a smaller subset of assets. The volatility and unstable correlation of assets like bitcoin remain an obstacle to their widespread inclusion in portfolios, the report’s authors wrote, adding that assumptions could shift as market liquidity, price discovery, and regulation mature.

Regulatory Clarity and Institutional Inflows Drive Crypto Ecosystem Growth

Institutional interest continues to build alongside clearer regulatory frameworks and expanding market infrastructure. In the report, Dr. Sheena Shah and Dennis Cristallo highlighted the growth of exchange-traded funds, futures, options, bank-grade custody, and financing markets. Investors are nevertheless increasingly exploring crypto assets, supported by more defined regulation and growing infrastructure, Shah and Cristallo wrote, identifying bitcoin as the anchor of an ecosystem comprising over 60 million coins and tokens.

JPMorgan analysts estimated that institutional capital inflows into digital assets reached roughly $50 billion early in 2026. This expansion coincides with strong activity in spot exchange-traded funds. BlackRock’s spot bitcoin ETF, IBIT, recorded $665 million in inflows on a single Monday, marking its highest single-day haul since October 2025.

Industry Figures Debate Volatility Projections

Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan welcomed the inclusion of bitcoin in the long-term forecast but disputed the 55% volatility estimate as overly conservative given historical trends over the past 15 years.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight at you, then they add you to their Long-Term Capital Markets Assumptions paper and predict you’ll be the best-performing asset of the next decade, Hougan wrote on X. Strategy Chairman Michael Saylor also commented on the report’s significance for traditional finance, stating on X that Wall Street is doing the math.
