Colombian Government Reveals Artifacts from Sunken Galleon ‘San Jose’

The Colombian government has unveiled for the first time some of the artifacts recovered from the legendary Spanish galleon ‘San Jose’, which sank in the 18th century. With the recovery of cannons, coins, and pottery fragments, research on the shipwreck, which remained a mystery for over 300 years, is taking a new turn.

The Colombian President’s Office announced in a press release on the 20th (local time) that President Gustavo petro was briefed on the progress of the research project titled ‘Toward the Heart of the San Jose Galleon’ and the results of the analysis of artifacts recovered from the shipwreck.

The relics revealed this time are scheduled to undergo conservation measures and consist of a cannon, a ceramic cup, three hammered coins (macukina), and two ceramic fragments.

The artifacts surfaced for the first time in 10 years, after Colombian authorities announced in 2015 that they had identified the remains of Lake San Jose about 600 meters below the seafloor near Cartagena.
