New Albany Shooting Leaves One Dead, One Injured

A dispute between two men in New Albany, Indiana, resulted in a fatal shooting on Thursday, March 31, 2022, leaving one man dead and another hospitalized. The incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. At an apartment in the 1800 block of Conservative Street.

Details of the Shooting

According to New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey, officers responded to reports of a shooting at the residence. Upon arrival, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Russell Smith, 41, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mareece Harris, 36, was conscious and alert and transported to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment, where he was listed in stable condition as of Friday morning.

Investigation Underway

Preliminary investigations indicate that a dispute between the two men preceded the shooting. Chief Bailey stated that due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the incident were not immediately available. WHAS11 reports that police believe all parties involved have been accounted for and that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

Separate New Albany Shooting Investigation

In a separate incident, a New Albany business owner remains in jail in connection with a murder-for-hire plot from May 13, 2025, while the man accused of carrying out the shooting, Aaron Brown, was released after only 43 days in custody. WDRB reports that Brown took a plea deal after telling police he was hired to murder a victim and his pregnant girlfriend.
