The legal challenge stems from events at Lewis Elementary School in Portland, where the mother’s children were enrolled. The dispute began over a decorative bench on school grounds. The bench originally featured stripes representing the gay community—something the mother stated she accepted. However, her objections arose after the school added stripes representing various gender identities.
The lawsuit also points to instructional materials brought home by her child. These included a worksheet asking students to identify their gender and a lesson plan instructing teachers to tell students, “It’s your brain, you tell us and the world what feels right to you.” The mother argued in the complaint that these displays and lessons conflict with her religious beliefs because they lead children to question their sex and how God made them.

The mother asked the school principal to permit her child to opt out of similar lessons in the future. After stating that her concerns were ignored, she began distributing letters to parents outside the school to detail her objections.

An argument during a confrontation with another parent outside the school led district officials to issue a trespass order barring the mother from campus for one year.
