International Badminton Challenge Draws 200 Athletes to Nan’an
The changes in Nan’an are tremendous! said Olympic champion Huang Dongping, reflecting on the growth of the sport in her hometown.
More than 200 athletes from 22 countries and regions have converged on Nan’an, Fujian province, for the 2026 “Wang Wenjiao Cup” China (Nan’an) International Badminton Challenge. The ongoing tournament supports the city’s push to integrate sports, culture, and tourism.
Legacy of Wang Wenjiao Fuels Grassroots Growth
Nan’an’s badminton roots trace back generations, anchored by the legacy of badminton great and “People’s Role Model” Wang Wenjiao. Local authorities have promoted Wang’s patriotic spirit and contributions to the sport. In his ancestral home of Dayang Village in Honglai Town, officials established the Wang Wenjiao Theme Park and hosted a dedicated exhibition. The city also launched the inaugural “Wang Wenjiao Cup” open tournament in December 2025, alongside production of the short drama Chasing the Wind Youth Wang Wenjiao.
An official with the Nan’an Culture, Sports, and Tourism Bureau noted that the continuous promotional efforts have driven local participation to new heights. Badminton courts across Nan’an now operate at full capacity every evening.
Olympic Champion Huang Dongping Notes Training Shift
Huang, who secured gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, contrasted her modest training conditions as a child with the city's current facilities. Professional facilities now span the municipality, and more and more residents are taking up the sport.
Nan’an currently maintains two dedicated badminton-specialty schools: Zhuli Primary School in Honglai Town and Guozhuan Central Primary School in Meishan Town, where Huang once studied. City officials aim to channel these resources into developing competitive talent for national representation.
Future Plans for Sports Tourism Integration
The influx of global competitors has elevated Nan’an’s profile.
The competition has raised Nan’an’s visibility and further promoted the integrated development of Nan’an’s culture, sports, and tourism,
the Nan’an Culture, Sports, and Tourism Bureau official stated, adding that the municipality plans to expand badminton development further.
Younger competitors are taking direct cues from the city’s athletic forebears. Wei Jianzhen, a Fujian native, men’s doubles quarterfinalist at the current challenge, and member of this year’s world junior team championship-winning squad, pointed to Wang and Huang as defining inspirations for his generation’s competitive drive on the international stage.
