WhatsApp Rolls Out Recent Media Suggestions Feature for Faster Sharing

WhatsApp is rolling out "Recent Media Suggestions," a feature that automatically surfaces the most recent photos and videos from your phone gallery directly inside active chat threads. As reported by TINTAHIJAU.com, the update—now deploying in stages to Android and iOS users—eliminates the need to manually scroll through folders to select content. Before this feature, users had to tap the camera icon or the attachment column to choose photos and videos from the gallery. According to GSM Arena, which reported the development on Wednesday (Nov. 4) local time, the tool appears to be a continuation of WhatsApp’s sticker recommendation feature.

Two Ways to Spot Your Latest Shot

Now photos and videos have entered the suggestion system, allowing users to send the latest media directly without opening the gallery first.

  • Notification Toast: A small notification containing a thumbnail of the most recent photo or video appears directly above the keyboard. Tap the thumbnail to initiate the sharing process or dismiss it to continue chatting.
  • Icon Replacement: The standard camera icon located in the chat bar is temporarily replaced by a thumbnail of the latest media item from the gallery.

The notification toast appears immediately after a user opens a conversation, displays a thumbnail of the latest media, asks whether the user wishes to send it, and includes a close button so it does not obstruct the chat view.

How to Turn On Recent Media Suggestions on WhatsApp (New Feature)

Tapping Opens the Editor, Not the Send Button

Both Telset.id and ANTARA News clarify that tapping these suggestions does not result in an immediate send. WhatsApp has confirmed it will not directly send the photo or video when tapped. Instead, the action redirects you to the media editor, where you can review the file, add captions or stickers, and confirm the action—a step intended to prevent the accidental sharing of sensitive or incorrect media files. Users can also back out of the editor without sending anything.

Disabling Gallery Integration Prevents Suggestions

The system does not filter media by source or type; it simply pulls the most recent item added to the device’s gallery, whether it is a camera shot, a screenshot, a web download, or a saved video from another application. For users who prefer not to see these prompts, the feature can be disabled. By navigating to Settings > Chats, you can toggle off the "Recent media suggestions" option to return to the standard interface. Telset.id notes that because the feature activates automatically upon arrival, users concerned about gallery privacy should verify their settings once the update reaches their device. The rollout is proceeding gradually around the world, so more accounts should receive the feature in the coming weeks, though it remains unclear when it will be available to everyone. Because the suggestions appear automatically and without filtering, users who wish to protect the privacy of their gallery contents should check the "Recent media suggestions" option in the Settings menu before the feature activates on their account.

Manually Sending Media After Notifications

Does the app automatically send photos if I tap the notification?
No. Tapping the recommendation opens the WhatsApp media editor. This allows you to preview the file, add a caption, or include stickers before you manually choose to send it.

Can I stop WhatsApp from suggesting my latest media?
Yes. You can turn off this functionality by going to your WhatsApp Settings, selecting the "Chats" menu, and disabling the "Recent media suggestions" toggle.

No, according to reports from Kompas and Telset.id, each user will only see one of the two display methods as WhatsApp rolls out different ways to integrate these suggestions into the chat interface.
